Day 2: SARAJEVO – VISEGRAD (120km – 3hrs)
Welcome to Sarajevo, a city with a rich history, significant cultural diversity, and a central role in European development. Located at the crossroads between East and West, Sarajevo represents an important melting pot of different cultures, religions, and traditions that have coexisted for centuries. During this guided tour of Sarajevo, you will gain insights into the city’s historical significance, shaped by Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, and contemporary influences. You will visit important landmarks such as the Sebilj Fountain, Baščaršija, and the Latin Bridge, and learn more about Sarajevo’s fascinating history, from the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand to its multicultural heritage. Afterwards, drive to Višegrad. This is a small town in the picturesque Drina Valley, nestled among gently rising hills and mountains. The heart of the town is the famous old stone bridge, built by Grand Vizier Mehmed Paša Sokolović, which today stands as a symbol of the region’s history and cultural richness. This impressive bridge not only connects the banks of the Drina but also tells stories from past times. A relaxing boat ride on the Drina offers impressive views of the bridge, the landscape, and the quiet power of the river, which has always shaped the fate of this region. Right next to the bridge lies Andrićgrad, a cultural-historical project by director Emir Kusturica. The complex combines architectural elements from different eras: Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, and medieval into an atmospheric setting that serves as a tribute to Ivo Andrić, his characters, and the region’s turbulent history. Cobblestone streets, arcades, small museums, and squares create a stage that transports visitors into a literary world. In the late afternoon, check in at the hotel in Višegrad.

Day 3: VISEGRAD – MOKRA GORA – TARA NATIONAL PARK – ZLATIBOR (150km – 4.5hrs)
After breakfast, the journey continues through the forested hills of eastern Bosnia to Mokra Gora, where a special highlight awaits: a ride on the legendary narrow-gauge railway “Šargan 8.” This historic route, an engineering masterpiece of the early 20th century, winds in the shape of a figure eight through the mountain landscape and overcomes an elevation difference of around 300 meters over just 15.5 kilometers. Five bridges, 22 tunnels, and a continuous sequence of views into narrow valleys, dense forests, and rocky slopes make this train ride an extraordinary experience. The route then continues into Tara National Park, one of the most beautiful and unspoiled nature reserves in Serbia. Dense fir forests, rugged gorges, and quiet mountain meadows characterize this region, which is also known for its cheese production. This is followed by a short and easy hike along the Rača trail. The path begins at the Rača Monastery, an important cultural and spiritual center from the 13th century, picturesquely located at the edge of the forest. The trail leads over soft forest ground along the clear Rača stream and ends at the thermal springs of Ladeva, whose warm waters have long been valued for their supposed healing properties. After a day full of impressive natural and cultural experiences, the journey continues across the Serbian border to the popular mountain resort of Zlatibor.

Day 4: ZLATIBOR – STOPIČA – STARO SELO – BIOGRADSKA GORA – KOLAŠIN (220km – 6hrs)
The day begins at the Stopiča Cave, one of the most impressive karst caves in Serbia. Massive underground halls open into a labyrinth of limestone formations, terrace-like natural pools, and a small but atmospheric waterfall. The interplay of light, stone, and water creates an almost mystical atmosphere. The journey continues to Sirogojno to the open-air museum “Staro Selo.” The site authentically presents preserved residential and farm buildings from the 19th century and offers vivid insights into traditional rural life in the region. Among wooden houses, looms, and old tools, a vivid picture of the past emerges, reflecting the culture and lifestyle of the Serbian mountain population. The route then leads through the mountainous region of southern Serbia and onward across the border into Montenegro. Vast forests, steep slopes, and open highland pastures accompany the drive toward Biogradska Gora, one of the oldest nature reserves in Europe. The national park is home to one of the last true primeval forests on the continent; a place where centuries-old trees, rare animals, and dense vegetation form an almost untouched ecosystem. A leisurely walk around Biogradsko Lake at an altitude of 1,099 meters is one of the highlights of the day. The mirror-like water, framed by steep mountain slopes and lush greenery, feels like a natural cathedral of silence and light. In the late afternoon, continue to Kolašin.

Day 5: KOLAŠIN – DURMITOR NATIONAL PARK – ŽABLJAK – KOLAŠIN (180km – 5hrs)
The day takes you deep into one of the most impressive high mountain landscapes of the Balkans. From Kolašin, the journey begins toward Durmitor National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its dramatic formations and largely untouched nature. Along the way, there are constant views of densely forested slopes, steep rock faces, and wide high plateaus that define the region. A first highlight is the monumental Tara Bridge, spanning the canyon, which, at depths of up to 1,200 meters, is the second deepest gorge in the world after the Grand Canyon. The emerald-green Tara River has shaped this immense landscape over thousands of years, a natural spectacle of overwhelming power and beauty. Durmitor itself is a mountain range of superlatives: 48 peaks rise above 2,000 meters, with the highest, Bobotov Kuk, reaching 2,522 meters. Glacial lakes, karst formations, mountain forests, and open pastures create a diverse landscape that serves as a habitat for numerous plant and animal species. The central point of the region is Žabljak, the highest town in the Balkans at 1,456 meters. From here, the route continues to the famous Black Lake (Crno jezero). This glacial lake lies nestled between dense forests and towering peaks at nearly 1,500 meters altitude and is considered one of Montenegro’s most beautiful lakes. Its calm surface reflects the mountain massif, creating one of the country’s most iconic natural scenes. After extensive impressions of the high mountain world, return to Kolašin.

Day 6: KOLAŠIN – MORAČA MONASTERY – OSTROG MONASTERY – LAKE SKADAR – BUDVA (200km – 5hrs)
The day begins with a drive into the impressive Morača Canyon, one of Montenegro’s most spectacular natural settings. Far below, the emerald-green Morača River winds through narrow rock passages, where steep walls sometimes rise so closely together that hardly any light reaches the riverbed. This dramatic landscape also served as a filming location for the Karl May classic “Der Schut.” On the riverbank lies the idyllic Morača Monastery, one of the country’s most important religious sites. The medieval complex impresses with its simple architecture, ancient frescoes, and a peaceful atmosphere set amidst wild nature. The route continues to the famous Ostrog Monastery, one of the most important centers of the Serbian Orthodox Church. Built high into a vertical rock face, the monastery appears almost miraculous. It attracts pilgrims from all over the world seeking spiritual renewal. At the same time, the terrace offers a wide view over the fertile Bjelopavlići plain—an impressive panorama that enhances the uniqueness of this place. At the end of the day, the landscape opens up to Lake Skadar, the largest lake in the Balkans and an important natural paradise. A boat trip takes you across the sprawling lake, past small islands, reed belts, and bird sanctuaries. Along the way, you will also see the abandoned prison island, often referred to as the “Montenegrin Alcatraz”—a quiet reminder of the region’s history. Day 7: BUDVA – KOTOR – PERAST – NIKŠIĆ (170km – 4.5hrs)
The day begins with a drive to Kotor and its bay. This natural wonder, often referred to as the southernmost “fjord” in Europe, stretches deep inland and forms a dramatic backdrop for the medieval town of Kotor, which is entirely surrounded by massive city walls. The historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and preserves a rare concentration of churches, palaces, and narrow streets that transport visitors back in time. A walking tour reveals the main sights and the unique atmosphere of this remarkable place. The journey continues along the bay to Perast, an elegant baroque town whose history is closely tied to seafaring. From here, a short boat ride leads to the small monastery island of Our Lady of the Rocks, with its church and views over the surrounding waters, one of the most iconic places in the region. In the afternoon, the journey continues into the higher regions of Montenegro. The landscape becomes more rugged, the villages more scattered, until Nikšić is reached, the country’s second-largest city and an important economic center. Here, the Mammut Brewery opens its doors. It is one of the few craft beer breweries in Montenegro and combines modern brewing techniques with regional ingredients and traditions. The evening ends with a shared dinner, accompanied by a tasting of local beer specialties.

Day 8: NIKŠIĆ – PIVA LAKE – FOČA – BJELAŠNICA (230km – 6.5hrs)
The day begins with a drive into the impressive mountain world of the northwest. The destination is Piva Lake, the largest reservoir in Montenegro, deeply embedded in the dramatic Piva Canyon. With its intense blue-green water, the lake appears almost unreal, a narrow, fjord-like mirror stretching between steep rock walls. During a boat ride, ever-changing perspectives of this wild scenery unfold, where water, stone, and forest form a harmonious unity. The route then returns to Bosnia and Herzegovina. Crossing the border mountains, the journey continues to Foča, a town on the banks of the Drina, whose history is closely linked to its Ottoman heritage and ancient trade routes. A walk through the town passes traces of past eras, including the colorful Aladža Mosque, one of the region’s most important cultural monuments. The tranquil river landscapes surrounding Foča further enhance the town’s charm. Foča is also the gateway to Sutjeska National Park, the oldest and largest national park in Bosnia. Its massive mountain ranges, deep gorges, and primeval forests are among the most biodiverse natural areas in southeastern Europe and vividly convey the character of an almost untouched wilderness. In the late afternoon, the ascent into the Bjelašnica mountains begins, once a venue of the 1984 Winter Olympics. The idyllic Hotel Nomad is located right next to the former sports facilities and offers a peaceful natural setting for the overnight stay, an ideal place to unwind after the day’s impressions.

Day 9: BJELAŠNICA – KONJIC – BJELAŠNICA (130km – 3hrs)
The day begins with a descent from the Bjelašnica massif into the Neretva Valley. Passing the old Olympic facilities of 1984, the view opens onto a pristine mountain landscape before reaching the small town of Konjic. Konjic is one of the oldest settlements in the country and impresses with its charming old town, narrow streets, traditional houses, and workshops where centuries-old crafts are still practiced. Particularly striking is the old stone bridge over the Neretva, a historic masterpiece of Ottoman architecture and one of the region’s most famous landmarks. An extraordinary chapter of more recent history follows with a visit to the secret nuclear bunker from Tito’s era. Deep inside a mountain massif, around 270 meters below the surface, one of the most important shelters of the former Yugoslavia was built over decades. The bunker, whose existence remained strictly secret until the 1990s, offers a fascinating insight into the political past and the strategic thinking of the leadership at the time. Today, its extensive halls serve as the venue for an international art exhibition that connects past and present.

Day 10: DEPARTURE SARAJEVO
Enjoy your last breakfast at the hotel and at the agreed time transfer to Sarajevo Airport for your return flight.
Pack comfortable walking shoes, as the tour includes city sightseeing and walks in national parks. Bring light, breathable clothing for warm days and a light jacket for cooler evenings or boat trips.
